To support the Rosedale Center for girls by raising funds for a new van, in order to transport students, teachers and volunteers to its many programs

Facts on the Ground

  • Rosedale's programs instill a sense of personal worth by developing students' talents, character, spirit of service, and by strengthening academic skills and work habits through individualized attention.
  • Roughly 62 teachers and volunteers rely on transportation from the van; roughly 50 students do, too. The current van is over 12 years old and has over 120,000 miles on it.
  • In the Bronx, 28.4% of the population lives below the poverty line, and over 40% of adults aged 16 are illiterate.
  • To stop the vicious cycle of poverty, the Rosedale Center offers many educational programs for young girls in the South Bronx; these programs include one-on-one tutoring, exam preparation courses, classes in extracurricular activities such as art, cooking, music, computer skills and more.
  • During summer vacations, Rosedale offers a Summer Achievement Program for students in grades 4 to 9, and offers a Job Training Progarm for high-school students.  Both these summer programs offer girls an excellent opportunity to learn from diverse and renown scholars, and gain real-world experience in the workplace.
  • Virtually all students graduate from high school and over 90% enter college.

Where We're Going

  • We’re trying to raise $35,000 so that Rosedale can buy a new van. Why a new van? Rosedale’s current vehicle is about to break down – it’s unsafe and on the verge of breaking down. Without a van, Rosedale’s students who participate in academic tutoring, individual mentoring, music and job training programs would be unable to attend. Rosedale’s programs have proven to help girls and young women in the South Bronx grow in character and become capable of making wise and independent choices. What's New

  • American Initiatives is collaborating with Rosedale in its Job Training Program.  We enjoyed the presence of an intern from Rosedale, Nona, in July 2012.
  • This past summer, 2013, one of our staff members, Stephanie O'Neill, helped with the Rosedale Summer Program. You can read more about it in our Fall Newsletter.
